You've heard it a million times before: you can buy fashion, but you can't buy style.
There are a multitude of instances that we can delve into that prove slapping on the priciest brand doesn't always get you on the best-dressed list, but some of the best dressed celebrities that are in our sphere of scope have mastered one trick: Mixing high-end and low-end brands.
It's just as simple as it sounds, mixing high-end and low-end is an equation that focuses on building a strong wardrobe that spends more on staple pieces, like shoes and bags, and less on low-end "of the moment" trends that are disposable. The highs of your outfit should be classic pieces that may be expensive, but cash out in cost-per-wear.
It may sound like something for the working class, but some of the most stylish of them all have the formula down to a tee. Check out our favorite master mixers below.
MICHELLE OBAMA
The FLOTUS' fashionable rise to fame was her ability to relate to the masses by donning low-end brands like J. Crew with other higher priced classics in her wardrobe. When it came to the second Inauguration of her Head of State hubby, Michelle's option to add some flair to a custom Thom Browne coat with a dazzling J.Crew belt and gloves was the mix on everyone's lips.
JAY-Z
When it comes to street style done right, Jay-Z is the man with the high-low plan. The Brooklyn native is a Timberland aficionado, and when he isn't draped in Givenchy t-shirts, he has no problem throwing on tees from affordable brands like Sportique and frank & jan, as long as it has a double entendre message to boot.
KIM KARDASHIAN
Ok, ok, we know you're probably wondering why the queen of Givenchy as lounge wear is on this list, but believe it or not, this fashionista will throw on a $40 dress...when it comes from her own line. The reality TV starlet has mastered the art of self-promotion by donning items from her affordable Dorothy Perkins line, stepping out in dresses from her Sears Kardashian Kollection and pairing them with high-end shoes, bags and accessories.
RIHANNA
Her face may be covered, but what is in plain sight is Rihanna's Na$ty sweatshirt from European brand MISBHV, a classic example of how the Bad Gal who frolics around the Balmain design studio and tours Coco Chanel's home can mix a $62 sweatshirt into her wardrobe. If that isn't proof enough, Rihanna designed an affordable, albeit sold out, collection with River Island and she wears the hell out of just about every single piece, paired with her Jimmy Choos of course.
BEYONCE
She's got it, but that doesn't always mean that Queen Bey has to flaunt it. When she isn't hitting the stage in custom Cavalli, she is hitting the streets in a Topshop fit that costs under $100, like demonstrated above. It's not all about the name brands; it's about how you strut it. As for splurging on accessories, Beyonce's glasses: Just $230. But she still looks like a million bucks.
