Gunmen abduct three corps members in Rivers

National Youth Service Corps members

THREE corps members were in the early hours of Saturday kidnapped by gunmen in Ogonokom Community Secondary School, Abua/Odua Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The corps members (two males and one female) were taken away by their abductors from the Corpers’ Lodge around 12am.

It was gathered that the hoodlums had gained entrance into their lodge while they (corps members) were fast asleep and seized their victims.

The abducted corps members were identified as Ogochi Martins, Chijioke Richard and Esther Nwachukwu.

Some items, including mobile phones were said to have been taken away by the suspected kidnappers, who came with a vehicle.

It was gathered that indigenes of the Ogonokom community were shocked when they learnt about the kidnap of the corps members, even as sources revealed that such incident had never occurred in the area.

SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that corps members had since been relocated to a neighbouring community where their lives and property would be safe.

A source at the National Youth Service Corps in the state told our correspondent that no contact had been established with the organisation on the whereabouts of the abducted corps members.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Angela Agabe, who confirmed the incident to SUNDAY PUNCH, said three armed men had invaded the lodge in Ogonokom community.

Agabe said the corps members were taken to an unknown destination, adding that police had begun investigation into the matter with a view to rescuing the corps members and apprehending their abductors.

“Three armed men stormed the Corpers’ Lodge in Ogolocom community and kidnapped three corps members. We have since started investigation. We are already on top of the situation,” she stated.

She said Osama, Ogolokom and Ogolom corps members lodge had been closed following the incident, adding that corps members had been moved to Ominima Central Corpers’ Lodge for safety.

Chinese lovers fall to their deaths while making love by window

A couple are believed to have fallen to their deaths when a window they were having sex against gave way. The horrific accident allegedly happened in China when the glass pane shattered.
The tragic man and woman are then understood to have hurtled to their deaths. Eyewitnesses said the couple both fell to the ground as they clinched on to each other.
A source in China said: “With the two of them holding each other tight, they fell out of the building”. Shocking photos in China appear to show the couple on the ground under sheets. Blood is splattered near their bodies on the pavement.
Medical staff and what appear to be police officers can also be seen examining the scene. The man and woman are thought to have fallen out of an apartment in the city of Wuhan, central China.

Cleo and Dillish humping each other

Daybreak: Cleo and Dillish humping each other

Hold the press; what do we have here? It’s sexy Diamond dames Dillish and Cleo getting a little freaky with each other.

Wait, what? Since when are these two as tight as thieves? Just this Monday Cleo had Nominated Dillish for Eviction and told Biggie, “I just don’t think she and I will get along”. But oh my; how quickly things do change in the Big Brother House.

As the Housemates got ready to sleep, Nando got a little playful with Dillish but the Namibian was clearly more interesting in getting ‘playful’ with Cleo. The pretty psychology student called out to the Zambian, “Cleo my love come hump me again. Come let’s hump”.

The hip hop star did not take long to bolt over to Dillish’s bed and mounted her like a cowboy on his trusty steed. While on top of her she worked those hips bouncing up and down like a pogo stick and simulated sexual movements as Dillish moaned out in exhilaration. Cleo then moved over to next bed and spread her legs wider than an eagle’s wings as it was Dillish’s turn to climb on board and the Namibian also simulated copulation. Even, resident pervert, Nando couldn't handle all this wild action as he jumped off the bed, exclaiming: “I’m out”. Wow, these girls! Just wow.

What do you think of Dillish and Cleo’s freaky antics? Funny or Foolish?

Brazil Vs. Spain: Confederations Cup Final Kickoff Time, Preview And Routes To The Final

Neymar

There was plenty of drama along the way, but the Confederations Cup has got the final that most neutrals craved: the hosts, looking to prove that they can claim the big prize back on home soil next year, against the most dominant side in the history of international soccer. In the fabled surroundings of the Maracana, Brazil will meet Spain on Sunday at 6 p.m. ET.

Arriving at the World Cup test event with little skepticism hanging over their heads, Brazil exceeded expectations by cruising through a potentially tricky group. Led by occasional moments of brilliance by Neymar, the Selecao made strong starts against Japan, Mexico and Italy. Comfortable victories were secured over their first two opponents, while a weakened Italy put up stiff resistance for a time in the second half before a third goal in as many games from the new face of the team, Neymar, helped his side to a 4-2 win.

It was a very different story in their semifinal agaisnt Uruguay, however. For the first time in the competition, Luiz Felipe Scolari’s men appeared inhibited, perhaps by the pressure from their demanding support or just the occasion itself. Had Diego Forlan converted an early penalty the script may have been shredded. The nation that inflicted Brazil’s most devastating soccer moment at the Maracana in the 1950 World Cup gave the hosts all they could handle before Neymar and Paulinho, arguably their two best players of the competition, combined for a late winner.

Yet, that drama was nothing compared to what was to unfold the following day. Like their opponents in the final, Spain had little trouble in their group as they recorded three straight wins. The first half of their opening game against Uruguay still marks the best showing by any side thus far in the Confederations Cup. There followed a second-string blitzing of minnows Tahiti, before Nigeria offered up some resistance only to eventually be brushed aside.

But the World and European champions were then pushed all the way by Italy in their semifinal. Refusing to sit back in reverence to the spell-binding tiki-taka of their opponents, the Azzurri were proactive and could have been at least a couple of goals to the good at the break. Spain’s success over the past seven years, though, has built an incredible winning mentality that seemed unimaginable not so long ago when they had a not-undeserved reputation as serial chokers.

La Roja again refused to be beaten. They came on strong in extra time and then held their nerve, scoring all seven penalties, as they made it three wins out of three in shootouts in their incredible reign atop the international scene.

Vicente Del Bosque’s side will have to show plenty of resilience once again in the final. Not only will they be facing a packed partisan crowd in the biggest match to date in the newly renovated Maracana, but they will have had less than 72 hours, and a day less rest than their opponents, to recover from having battled it out for 120 minutes and more in the stifling heat and humidity in Fortaleza.

For a competition often derided in the past as an unwelcome distraction from a summer of rest and recuperation, there will be much on the line. A Spanish win would not only see them take home the one trophy so far to elude them but also lay down a marker that they are still very much the side to beat as they try for an unthinkable fourth straight major tournament win at the 2014 World Cup. While for Brazil, victory would fill the inexperienced squad, as well as their supporters, with belief that the ghost of 1950 can finally be exorcised.

BGT Alesha Dixon pregnant for Nigerian Beau Azuka Ononye

Alesha Dixon and Azuka OnonyeAlesha DixonAlesha Dixon and Azuka Ononye

Britain’s Got Talent star Alesha stunned the showbiz world last week by revealing she is pregnant with Azuka Ononye’s child.
Until that point the millionaire former pop star had kept the relationship secret.
But we can reveal the pair have been together for 3½ years and shared a close friendship for a long time before that.
And far from being a fellow celebrity, Azuka, or AZ as he is known to pals, came from humble beginnings in Nigeria and has had to scrape a living for years.

Smooch ... BGT judge Alesha Dixon and dancer Azuka Ononye party with a kiss
When he was a teenager he moved to the UK for a better life with his two elder brothers. They raised him in a council flat in Fulham, West London — where he still lived until recently. It’s a world away from the Hertfordshire mansion owned by Alesha, who earns £400,000 as a BGT judge and has other lucrative contracts.
Last night a close pal said: “She and AZ are perfect for each other and they are madly in love, but they couldn’t have more different lives.”
AZ hates sponging off Alesha, 34, and insists on paying his own way, but the former singer with Noughties girl group Mis-Teeq has treated him to the high life.
They have been on several expensive holidays to Miami and Europe.

Smitten ... BGT star Alesha Dixon with Azuka Ononye at his 32nd birthday
Meanwhile, his pals have dubbed him the “Louis Vuitton man” because of the designer clothes she buys him.
Our exclusive pictures show the couple at a 32nd birthday party Alesha arranged for AZ earlier this year. She booked The Crazy Bear Club in Beaconsfield, Bucks, and invited all his friends and family — splashing out thousands of pounds.
The couple met in 2006 when AZ worked as a dancer for R&B group Mis-Teeq, whose hits included Scandalous.
At the time Alesha was still recovering from the heartache of being two-timed by So Solid Crew husband, MC Harvey, 34.
Alesha and AZ became great friends, but did not take it further until 2010.

Lovely bubbly ... dancer Azuka Ononye
The friend said: “AZ’s a very charismatic guy, so Alesha was drawn to him and any man in their right mind would fancy Alesha, so things just sort of developed naturally.
“About two years ago they properly came out as a couple with us, but they didn’t want anyone from outside our core group to have any idea.”
According to the pal, their baby news came as a shock but the pair are over the moon.
He added: “They are not in a mad rush to tie the knot, but there will be wedding bells at some point in the not too distant future.”

53-year-old woman gives birth to twins after 20 years of childlessness

Chief Medical Director of St Ives Hospital, Babatunde Okewale

It was an overwhelming joy in St Ives Hospital, Lagos when a 53-year-old woman, (names withheld) was recently delivered of two bouncing baby boys.

The woman was conceived through Invitro Fertilisation,IVF, after having struggled for over 20 years without a child.

IVF is a process by which an egg is fertilised by sperm in the body. The process involves monitoring a woman’s ovulatory process, removing ovum or ova (egg or eggs) from the woman’s ovaries
and letting the sperm fertilise them in a fluid medium in a laboratory.

The fertilised egg (zygote) is then transferred to the patient’s uterus (womb) after three to five days of being in the incubator, with the intention of
establishing a successful pregnancy.

The elated woman, who pleaded anonymity, probably for cultural reasons, described it as “20 years of tensed
waiting for her marriage to produce fruits.”

The jubilant nursing mother and her husband said they were not after publicity but decided to speak to
the press in order to encourage couple who are presently facing similar challenges in their marriage, so they don’t give up, adding that it is never too late for anyone.

She admitted that she has almost giving up when it was obvious that menopause had set in, but continued to exercise her religious faith, until according to her, God directed her to St Ives Centre,
even when she was not having the required money to carry out the IVF circle.

“If one is in a marriage for two – three years, and has no child to show for it, as an African, there will be pressure, so mine was not exceptional. Though my people respected my person, there were pressures both from within and outside.

But l held on to God because I’m a strong Christian and l know He never fails. I serve a living God who is faithful despite our unfaithfulness.

“I heard about St. Ives just by chance. That was in September last year. Coincidentally, l did my Masters programme at Obafemi Awolowo University,OAU, very close to the hospital, and l never knew this place existed. It was divine and all things work together for those that love God.

“My advice to every woman wanting fruit of the womb is that they should hold on to God and l pray for them that their joy should come into manifestation soon. There is nothing impossible for God, it could be difficult with man, but certainly not with God. If He can do mine at 53, it shows that no case is concluded.

“For me, l see it as a reward of my past shame. God has given me double glory, my two boys. It is more than a miracle. And for the management of St Ives, l keep praying for them because they are not after one’s money, if they were, l couldn’t have registered.

“People used to call me Big Mummy, but God has given me a new and better name, ‘mummy twins’. l am now a fulfilled woman,” she narrated.

Her husband, who claimed to be four months older than his wife, said he knew his wife at age 12 when they were in secondary school, but time and space set them apart for separate marriages where the man was fortunate to have children unlike the woman.

Fate however reunited them to become a happy family again, having known each other for over 40 years.

He said the joy that the twins brought to the family had overridden their past apprehension; trauma and agony all through the years of his wife’s infertility, adding that she might have wept secretly on countless occasions.

“Today, all we are saying is thank you God. My wife had fasted and prayed and l believed that is why you see her looking like under sixteen now. I must confess that everybody is happy,” he said.

Reacting on the feat, Chief Medical Director of St Ives Hospital, Babatunde Okewale said the hospital’s Fertility Unit adopts a success-oriented approach towards infertility, focusing on solution for infertile couples at an affordable cost, rather than doing endless investigation and tests.

Photographer drags 2Face, wife to court over wedding pictures

*Tuface and Annie Idibia during their traditional marriage

The Idibias got married, hired a very expensive photographer to cover the wedding but ended up not paying?!

Justice Mohammed Idris of  the Federal High Court sitting in Lagos has fixed  October 16, 2013 for the commencement of trial in a N120 million copyright suit filed against popular music  star, Innocent Idibia, a.k.a. TuFace, his wife, Annie Idibia and their manager, Anthonio Anifite over  photographs allegedly taken at the recent traditional wedding of the musician and his wife in Akwa Ibom State.
Abuja based photographer, Emmanuel Okolo, who is the plaintiff in the suit alongside his studio, Papilonmexy  filed suit against the defendants.
He is asking for six reliefs, two of which include N100 million in general damages and N20million in exemplary damages.
At the resumed hearing of the case yesterday, neither TuFace nor his wife was represented in court. Anifite who is the second defendant was however represented by his counsel, J.O Uttute.
Meanwhile, a mild drama ensued when the judge openly admonished Uttute after the latter claimed that he had filed his defence when he had not done so.
The judge warned him not to come to this court again if he was not prepared for the case.  “You told me that you have filed your response, but looking through here, there is nothing to that effect. And you are even smiling. Do you think you are here to joke? Never come to this court again if you are not prepared. You don’t even know when the case was filed and you are not prepared for it,” said the judge.
Also,  the plaintiff’s counsel,  Habeeb Oredola expressed worry over the defendants’ inability to appear before the court  or  be represented by a counsel after they were served with the writs of summon.
In the writ of summon, Okolo and his studio claimed they were contracted by TuFace’s wife through a third party, identified as Ms Chineze Anyaene to take photo shots at the traditional wedding held in Eket, Akwa Ibom state in March, 2013.
The plaintiff said, he was reluctant at the beginning since the offer was coming through a third party, but later accepted after he was convinced that the offer was actually with the blessing of the first defendant.
Annie Idibia was said to have later contacted the photographer after the wedding and demanded for the printing of 10 of the high resolution pictures taken.

No going back: Death penalty, gay marriage ban are here to stay – FG insists

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru (Photo: Punch)
Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru

Federal Government has rejected the recommendation by the United Nations Human Rights Council on the protection of same sex marriage and abolition of the death penalty.

In a draft report to the United Nations Human Rights Council on resolution 16/20 discussed at a Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on the second cycle of Nigeria’s Universal Periodic Review in Abuja on Friday, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Olugbenga Ashiru, said same sex marriage was against out tradition so external forces could not impose it on the country and on the abolition of death penalty, Ashiru said the Criminal Code in use was enacted by the colonial masters.

“If anything is wrong about it, why are they blaming us?” he reportedly said.

According to reports, Ashiru, who wondered why gay rights had generated interest from the United Nations, queried the negative campaign against polygamy, which, according to him, was allowed in African tradition.

“You should not shy away from defending what you believe is right. Whatever is in our constitution, you must defend it. We must stand by our constitution. We must stand by our customs and tradition,” he said.

“If you want to have gay right in your constitution; fine, but we have our own constitution. The same human rights they want to protect for gay people; how about people that want to go into polygamy if they so desire and women are willing to marry them. Polygamy is human rights in our tradition.”

The Punch reports:

Ashiru also denied allegations of extra-judicial killings by the military against the Boko Haram insurgents in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, where emergency rule had been proclaimed by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Challenging those with credible evidence to come forward, Ashiru maintained that the record of Nigeria’s military in peace keeping mission was unassailable.

The Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Bem Angwe, said Nigeria had done creditably well in Human Rights.

Although he noted that the country had some obligations to the United Nations, he said no country could dictate to another because as a sovereign nation, Nigeria has the right to protect the interests of its citizens

Enough is enough: FG places ban on unauthorised use of siren, covered number plates, others

Head of Service of the Federation, Alhaji Bukar Goni Aji (Photo: www.zimbio.com)
Head of Service of the Federation, Alhaji Bukar Goni Aji

The unauthorised use of siren, covered number plates and unregistered vehicles is now prohibited in Nigeria as the Federal Government has directed all its functionaries to henceforth comply, saying it portends danger for national security.

According to reports, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Bukar Goni Aji, according to a statement by the Director of Communication in his office, Tope Ajakaiye, issued the directive in a circular to all Ministries, Departments and Agencies of government.

“Such acts portend grave danger for national security, especially in view of intelligent reports indicating that men of the underworld also indulge in these unlawful acts to perpetrate heinous crimes,” he said.

“Directives have been issued to the Nigeria Police to apprehend any government official found engaging in such practices for appropriate prosecution.”

The Punch reports:

Consequently, the government has directed security agencies to arrest any official involved in such act.

Meanwhile, the HOS has stressed the need to revisit the age-long values and code of ethics guiding the conduct of civil servants.

Aji, in another circular to all MDAs, said the decision was in continuation of the desire to reposition the civil service for effective service delivery.

He listed the values and ethics as discipline, integrity, moral rectitude, political neutrality, loyalty and patriotism, courtesy and politeness.

Others are modesty, tact and industry, tidiness in work environment and decency in dressing, probity and accountability and promptness in service delivery.

He called on civil servants to “ensure efficient service delivery and display professional discipline in the discharge of their responsibilities in order to enhance public confidence.”

The HOS had earlier this week banned the conferment of chieftaincy titles and “other sundry awards” on civil servants until after their retirement or disengagement from service.

This came two weeks after the civil service criminalised private practice and warned against ownership of private enterprises, except farming.

PHOTO: Couple Caught Having S*X In Public

Two people who were allegedly “getting lucky” in a public park ended up getting arrested by 25 cops on bicycles.
Jennifer Harvey, 41, and Richard McBride, 37, were arrested Tuesday afternoon after officers — 25 of them, all on bikes — say they saw them having s*x on a bench near a baseball field at Naylors Run Park in Upper Darby, Pa.
“There they are, on the first base line. There’s a bench, she is bent over the bench and our friend is behind her with his pants down to his ankle, banging away,” is how Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood colorfully put it to Philly.com.

The 25 were participating in a “bicycle school” when they saw the couple in alleged action. The authorities were the only ones in the vicinity when they made the arrest.

Harvey and McBride were both arrested and charged with open lewdness and disorderly conduct. Chitwood suspects they were surprised by the level of police interest.
“Imaging being arrested by 25 cops,” Chitwood said, according to NBC Philadelphia. “They were as shocked as the police were.”
Harvey and McBride were both released on $30,000 unsecured bail pending a preliminary hearing July 10 in district court, the Delco Times reported.

Hemp photos: Tonto Dikeh risks 15-year jail term

Tonto Dikeh

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency on Friday said controversial Nigerian actress, Tonto Dikeh, risks a minimum of 15 years in jail for encouraging the consumption of hemp.

Dikeh had on Friday posted photographs of a wrap of hemp and grains of the weed formed into the letters, ‘Happy birthday POKO.’

She also posted a photograph of herself and added the inscription, ‘Mi smoke ganja mi smoke weed while my hatez smoke ma gossip.’

Her picture is a close-up of her face that seemed to depict her in a high state.

When Saturday PUNCH contacted NDLEA for comments, its spokesman, Mr. Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the matter would be investigated.

He said the matter had been referred to the appropriate department of the agency.

Ofoyeju said, “Our attention has been drawn to the post quite frankly and I can tell you that action will be taken on it. The law is clear and NDLEA has been very clear on the issue. No one is permitted to sell, use, cultivate or encourage the use of Indian hemp in Nigeria. The weed is one of the banned narcotics in the country.

“NDLEA Act Section 14 (b) states that any person who conspires with, aids, abets, counsels, attempts to commit or is an accessory to any act or offence referred to in this act shall be guilty of an offence under this act and liable on conviction to be sentenced to imprisonment for a term not less than 15 years and not exceeding 25 years.

“Investigation has not started as of now but definitely, a step has to be taken on the matter. Ignorance of the law is not an excuse; so, it is obvious that the actress stands the risk of 15 years jail term. The appropriate department is meeting on the issue for necessary action.”

The NDLEA spokesman, however, declined to give any hint on particular steps the agency would take in its investigation, citing reasons bearing on ethics.

Dikeh’s post has expectedly drawn mixed reactions from readers, with many of them voicing concern for the way she is living her life.

Spain to meet Brazil in the Confeds Final After à tug of war with Italy ends 7-6 on PK

For 120 minutes Spain and Italy battled to a scoreless deadlock in the hot and humid Brazilian evening. Through six rounds of penalties, no one missed and the pressure built. Finally it was Leonardo Bonucci who cracked, sending his PK over the crossbar, allowing Jesús Navas to put Spain into the final.

Spain were all over Italy from the opening whistle and nearly got on the board in the 2nd minute after Pedro Rodriguez got free in space in the middle of the Italy box. The Barcelona forward's shot rolled just wide of the post, barely missing giving La Roja a dream start to the match.

Italy were able to hit at Spain on the counter attack and earned a corner kick in the 8th minute that almost yielded a goal. The one and only Andrea Pirlo sent a lovely ball into the middle of the area where Christian Maggio got free and was able to get a clean header off. His effort sailed over the crossbar, but it was a close call for Spain despite their early domination.

As the half moved on, Italy settled into their defensive shell and continued to counter when the opportunity presented itself. In the 15th minute, Maggio found Alberto Gilardino, who had created some space between himself and his marker, with a loss cross but the striker's shot to the far post rolled wide of the post.

Then, out of nowhere, the Azzurri flipped the switch and really cranked up the pressure.

Less than two minutes later, Maggio beat Jordi Alba to a long ball on the left edge of the box but Iker Casillas read the play well and was right on top of Maggio's header, blocking it away from danger. A minute later Fernando Torres lost Daniele De Rossi on a set piece, but the Roma midfielder's header went wide of the goal.

Claudio Marchisio got in on the fun in the 18th minute, sending a diving header from the center of the Spanish area wide to the right. Again it was Maggio helping create the chance as he gave Alba fits on the right wing, "clowning him" if you prefer a more colorful explanation.

Basically what Pennywise did to Bill Denbrough.

Italy were again denied in the 37th minute thanks to a tremendous save by Casillas. Emanuele Giaccherini found Maggio -- who again had gotten behind Alba as the Barca wingback's nightmarish day continued -- who put a textbook diving header on frame that was expertly blocked by the Spanish goalkeeper.

Despite all the chances -- a plethora if you will -- Italy couldn't convert any of the multitude of chances they had in the opening 45 minutes and the match went to the break scoreless.

It was definitely a bit slower during the opening 20 minutes of the second half as Italy continued to dictate the pace. The counter attack chances weren't as prevalent though, and while Spain saw a bit more of the ball, they weren't able to do much with their own attack.

Italy got a great chance in the 68th minute when Marchisio received the ball in the six-yard box but his shot was blocked thanks to an excellent tackle by Gerard Pique.

In the 85th minute Pique had a chance of his own after Fernando Torres found some energy and made a slicing run into the Italian area. Torres dropped the ball back to the charging defender but his shot was woefully poor, flying well over the crossbar and into the crowd behind the goal.

The second half may have lacked the dramatic close calls we saw in the first half but it was still a fascinating tactical chess match as Spain tried to find a way past Italy's staunch defense. In the end, they couldn't do it and extra time was required.

The trend of Italy getting the dangerous chances continued early in the extra time as substitute Sebastian Giovinco deflected a ball across the face of goal to the far post where it was met by Giaccherini. The Juventus midfielder's shot beat Casillas but hammered off the post, again denying the Italians a goal.

From there it was all Spain.

Spain were denied in the 96th minute thanks to a fantastic reaction and block by De Rossi who prevented Pique from getting onto a loose ball in the six-yard box. Sergio Ramos had a chance on the ensuing corner, but couldn't get his header anywhere near the goal.

Two minutes later Iniesta's picture-perfect chip into the path of Jordi Alba was wasted as the wingback couldn't get his volley attempt down and sent it just over the crossbar.

Juan Mata sent a shot wide to the left in the 108th minute but his focus on the goal may have cost Spain a chance as Álvaro Arbeloa was lurking unmarked to his right.

More from Spain in the 115th minute when Xavi's missile from distance was parried by Gianluigi Buffon and off the post. The ball ricocheted right to Javi Martinez but his shot rolled wide at the far post.

In the end, 120 minutes was not enough and we went to the dreaded penalty kicks. Easily the most cruel way to decide a sporting event that has ever been invented. It's like being put in the "Torture Rack" by Lex Luger.

For six rounds of penalties, both teams were perfect. Antonio Candreva's paneka opened things up and systematically Xavi, Aquilani, Iniesta, De Rossi, Pique, Giovinco, Ramos, Pirlo, Mata, Montolivo and Sergio Busquets all scored.

Then a nervous-looking Leonardo Bonucci stepped up for Italy and skied his effort over the crossbar. Jesús Navas, a player who once avoided international games due to anxiety, calmly beat Buffon to send Spain into the final against Brazil.

What an entertaining match between two excellent teams.

Brazil defeated Uruguay 2 - 1, to reach the Final.

Uruguay was granted a gift in the opening 15 minutes of their Confederations Cup semifinal against Brazil, but they were unable to capitalize and the game remains scoreless.

Diego Lugano was taken down in the box by David Luiz, leading to the referee giving a penalty -- a no-doubter as Luiz executed a rugby tackle on Lugano to lead to the spot kick.

Julio Cesar came up huge with a save on Diego Forlan, though, to keep the penalty from causing too much of a difference.

The save by Cesar was a brilliant one. Usually saved penalties result from less than optimal shots placed nowhere near the corner, but Forlan's penalty wasn't a bad one. He appeared to have the lower right corner picked out well, but Cesar did brilliantly to get across and make the stop. Fred scores to put Brazil up on Uruguay

How Fred went from being a sold, but unspectacular striker at Olympique Lyonnais to being a key player for the Brazilian national team is anyone's guess, but he's on fire and has locked down his starting center forward position. He's now netted eight goals in his last 10 games in a Brazil shirt, including his team's first goal in their Confederations Cup semifinal against Uruguay, putting them up 1-0 in the first half. Edinson Cavani equalized for Uruguay at the start of the secon half, 48th minute. However, Paulinho scores the winning goal for Brazil. He netted the winning goal in Brazil's 2-1 victory over Uruguay with a brilliant header on a corner to take Brazil to the final.

Congrats Brazil!

£3,000 visa bond: FG summons British High Commissioner

Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru (L), British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Andrew Pocock

A diplomatic row  seems to be  brewing between Nigeria and the United Kingdom following a  proposed policy by the  British Government  requiring  Nigerian travellers to the UK to deposit £3,000 as bond in case they overstay  their visa limits.

On Monday,  the Federal Government  summoned the British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Andrew Pocock, over the development  while the House of Representatives which flayed  the policy, argued that it could have negative impact on the relationship between  the two countries.

Nigeria, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ghana, Pakistan and India are  listed by the UK  as  countries whose citizens are to deposit the £3,000 under  the  proposed  policy that will take off in November.

A Home Office official said the six countries highlighted were those with “the most significant risk of abuse.”

About 2.2million people are granted visas to enter Britain every year.

Last year, 296,000 people from India were granted six-month visas, as were 101,000 from Nigeria; 53,000 from Pakistan; and 14,000 apiece from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

According to media reports, the Home Secretary Theresa May,  said the administration of British Prime Minister, David Cameron,  is serious about cutting immigration and abuses of the system.

The Sunday Times of  London had reported that  every visitor  aged 18 and above granted a  six-month visa would  forfeit the £3,000 if they overstayed in Britain after the expiration of their  visa .

Initially, the scheme will target hundreds of visitors, but the plan is to extend it to several thousands, according to the broadsheet’s front-page report.

It was gathered that Pocock would  meet with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru,  on Tuesday (today) to explain  the policy.

A source close to the ministry, who confirmed the meeting,  said the government was seriously concerned about the implication of the policy on the economy and image of the country.

“Pocock is to explain to government if the plan is true and why Nigeria is a target. Government is worried about the highly discriminatory policy which tends to portray the country in a bad light,” he explained.

Another source told one of our correspondents that the Nigerian High Commissioner to the UK, Dr. Dalhatu Tafida,  was  also billed to brief Ashiru    on the development.

But Ashiru,  at the 2013 Ministerial Platform on the mid-term activities and achievements of the ministry in Abuja on Monday, said  he had not been contacted officially by the UK authorities  on the development.

He said, “We have not received any official communication from the UK government. When we receive communication, we will study the proposal. I can assure all Nigerians that President Goodluck Jonathan’s government will defend the interest of Nigerians by whatever means it can. When we get the proposal,  we will study it to see how it will  affect  ordinary Nigerians.”

In the   House of Representatives,  Chairman,  Committee on Foreign Affairs, Ms. Nnena Elendu-Ukeje, stated that the policy was a U-turn on a promise by the British Prime Minister, David Cameron, to improve trade relations between the two countries  next year.

She said,  “This policy will not foster true  relationship between Nigeria and the UK. It does not promote the spirit of the Commonwealth either.

“The same British Government that promised improved trade relations with Nigeria is introducing such a discriminatory policy.

“It is a somersault, to say the least.”

However, Elendu-Ukeje observed that the policy appeared to be “a political issue.”

She explained, “The Conservative Party wants to prove that they are serious about immigration matters. They are doing this to win voters ahead of the next elections.”

But, she called on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to register its protest before the take-off date of the policy.

“We have to take proactive measures to oppose this policy and by way of reciprocity because next time they will increase this bond of a thing”, she said.

The lawmaker recalled that in 2008, the British Government introduced £1,000 “fine” on travellers.

“They tried it first in 2008; today, four years down the line, they are saying that it will be £3,000. What will be the next figure if we don’t take proactive measures now?” Elendu-Ukeje  asked.

An expert in constitutional law, Prof. Itse Sagay, also  described the  policy as “  hostile and therefore contrary to international diplomacy.”

He said, “It is evidence of contempt and a clear case of saying ‘we don’t want people from their country and  so let us make it impossible for them to come.

“How many people can pay N750,000 as deposit which the British Government will keep and probably trade with while the owner cannot touch it. I think we need to respond appropriately by also raising impossible barrier to British people coming into Nigeria  so  that at  the end,  we will see who will lose more.

“I think they are making the mistake of believing we need them more than they need us.  In fact,  it is they who are making more out of Nigeria.

“They have a wrong idea of their importance to us. We are more important to them than they are to us.”

Meanwhile,  Ashiru said at the   Ministerial Platform  that Nigeria’s   foreign policy in the 70s  could not  be compared with the present.

He said, “The problem today is unemployment. We have to use diplomacy to support job creation in Nigeria so that we can develop our private sector to make it  employ more people.

“Our youths from universities cannot get jobs. So foreign diplomacy must be used to create jobs and that is what we have been doing.”

Justifying the budgets for generators and fuel used by  Nigerian High Commissions in countries with constant power supply, Ashiru said the criticism “is the ignorance of the highest order.”

“It is to power the boiler which in most countries in Europe either uses fuel or gas. It is to heat and power the foreign mission houses in winter and also to get hot water.”

According to him, the biggest challenge facing the ministry is the plight of Nigerians living abroad.

“All ambassadors now know that their priority is to attend to the needs of Nigerians in their countries of accreditation. No Ambassador today is allowed to close his doors on Nigerians,” the minister said.

Ashiru warned Nigerians living abroad against drug trafficking, adding that it was tantamount to committing suicide.

“I must   warn those who willfully commit crime and thereby commit suicide. Drug trafficking in some countries attracts death penalty. All the airports today have sophisticated equipment; there is no where you hide the drug in your body that you will not be caught.”

Ashiru also ruled out closing any foreign mission house because, “when you close a mission, you lose a friend. Nigeria cannot afford to lose a friend at this time”.

He promised that no Nigeria would be treated unjustly in foreign lands.
